Is Cancun Weather Perfect Year-Round? Here’s What You Need to Know

Average Temperature in Cancun Year-Round

Cancun enjoys warm tropical temperatures throughout the entire year, which is one of the main reasons it’s such a popular destination!

Overall averages:

• Annual average temperature: 78°F (26°C)
• Warmest months: July-August with highs around 91-95°F (33-35°C)
• Coolest months: December-February with highs around 82-84°F (28-29°C)
• Nighttime lows: Range from 65-68°F (18-20°C) in winter to 75-77°F (24-25°C) in summer

Even in the “coolest” months, you’ll still have perfect beach weather. That’s the beauty of Cancun – it’s essentially summer all year long!

Average Rainfall in Cancun

Rainfall in Cancun varies significantly between the dry and wet seasons:

Dry Season (November-April):

• Minimal rainfall: 45-85mm per month
• Rain is infrequent and brief
• December, January, February, and March are the driest months
• Occasional rain showers, but mostly sunny skies

Wet Season (May-October):

• Increased rainfall: 100-200mm per month
• June and October are the wettest months (200mm+)
• September typically sees the most rain
• Short afternoon or evening showers are common
• Rain usually doesn’t last all day

Important: Even during the wet season, rain typically comes in quick bursts – 30 minutes to an hour – then the sun comes back out. It rarely ruins entire days, so don’t let the wet season scare you away!

Sea Temperature in Cancun

One of Cancun’s biggest draws is the beautiful, warm Caribbean Sea. And guess what? The water is comfortable for swimming year-round!

Water temperature by season:

• Winter (December-February): 78-79°F (25-26°C)
• Spring (March-May): 79-82°F (26-28°C)
• Summer (June-August): 83-85°F (28-29°C)
• Fall (September-November): 82-84°F (28-29°C)

The warmest water is from June through October, when it feels like bathwater. Even the “coolest” winter months are still perfectly comfortable for swimming, snorkeling, and diving without a wetsuit! However keep in mind that it is a general consideration and if you are usually cold in the water, consider a wetsuite in winter, especially if you are diving and spend long hours in the water.

Humidity Levels in Cancun

Cancun is a tropical destination, so humidity is definitely something to be aware of:

Dry Season (November-April):

• Humidity: 65-75%
• More comfortable and less muggy
• Better for outdoor activities
• Hair and makeup hold up better!

Wet Season (May-October):

• Humidity: 80-95%
• Can feel quite sticky and oppressive
• Air conditioning becomes your best friend
• August and September are the most humid months

The combination of high heat and high humidity in summer can make it feel hotter than the actual temperature, so plan indoor activities during the hottest part of the day.

Hurricane Season in Cancun

Hurricane season officially runs from June 1st through November 30th, with the peak period being August through October.

What you need to know:

• September and October have the highest hurricane risk
• Hurricanes are still relatively rare – most years Cancun is unaffected
• Only a handful of major hurricanes have hit Cancun in the past 30 years
• Modern buildings are built to hurricane standards
• Hotels have evacuation plans and safety protocols
• Travel insurance is highly recommended during hurricane season

If you’re visiting during hurricane season:

• Monitor weather forecasts closely
• Book refundable accommodations when possible
• Purchase travel insurance that covers weather-related cancellations
• Don’t panic – tropical storms and hurricanes usually give several days notice
• Many hurricanes veer away or weaken before landfall

What to expect: January is one of the best months to visit Cancun! It’s peak season with gorgeous weather – warm and sunny with minimal rain. Occasional cold fronts (nortes) can bring cooler temperatures and wind for 2-3 days. Crowds are high, especially early in the month after New Year’s. Prices are at their peak.

Best for: Beach vacations, avoiding winter at home, water sports, exploring ruins in comfortable weather.

February Weather in Cancun

Temperature: Highs 83-85°F (28-29°C), Lows 68-71°F (20-22°C) Sea Temperature: 78-79°F (25-26°C) Rainfall: 45-65mm (2 inches) Rainy Days: 4-6 days Humidity: 70-75% Sunshine: 7-8 hours per day

What to expect: February is THE best weather month in Cancun! It’s the driest month with the most sunshine and comfortable temperatures. Perfect beach weather day after day. High season continues with lots of tourists and premium prices. Spring break crowds start arriving late in the month.

Best for: Perfect beach weather, water activities, sightseeing, romantic getaways, escaping cold climates.

March Weather in Cancun

Temperature: Highs 85-87°F (29-30°C), Lows 70-72°F (21-22°C) Sea Temperature: 79-80°F (26-27°C) Rainfall: 50-70mm (2-3 inches) Rainy Days: 4-6 days Humidity: 70-75% Sunshine: 8-9 hours per day

What to expect: March continues the excellent dry season weather with warmer temperatures as spring arrives. Spring break brings massive crowds of students, especially mid-to-late March. Hotels are packed and prices remain high. The weather is still fantastic – sunny, warm, and dry with minimal rainfall.

Best for: Beach parties, spring break fun, water sports, ideal beach weather (if you don’t mind crowds).

April Weather in Cancun

Temperature: Highs 87-89°F (30-32°C), Lows 72-74°F (22-23°C) Sea Temperature: 81-82°F (27-28°C) Rainfall: 60-85mm (2-3 inches) Rainy Days: 5-7 days Humidity: 72-78% Sunshine: 8-9 hours per day

What to expect: April marks the transition toward warmer weather. Temperatures rise noticeably and humidity starts increasing. Still part of the dry season with mostly sunny days. Early April has spring break crowds, but they thin out mid-month, making it a shoulder season period with better prices. Sargassum seaweed may start appearing on beaches.

Best for: Warm beach weather, fewer crowds after spring break, shoulder season pricing, diving and snorkeling.

May Weather in Cancun

Temperature: Highs 89-91°F (32-33°C), Lows 75-77°F (24-25°C) Sea Temperature: 82-83°F (28°C) Rainfall: 100-130mm (4-5 inches) Rainy Days: 8-10 days Humidity: 77-82% Sunshine: 8-9 hours per day

What to expect: May is the start of the wet season, but it’s still a great time to visit! Temperatures are hot, and humidity increases noticeably. Rain showers become more frequent but are usually brief afternoon or evening storms.

Fewer tourists mean better prices and less crowded beaches. Sargassum seaweed starts to be an issue, though. Whale shark season begins mid-to-late May, although it’s not the best month for that.

Best for: Shoulder season deals, swimming with whale sharks (possibly), fewer crowds, hot weather lovers, and water sports.

June Weather in Cancun

Temperature: Highs 90-92°F (32-33°C), Lows 76-77°F (24-25°C) Sea Temperature: 83-84°F (28-29°C) Rainfall: 150-200mm (6-8 inches) Rainy Days: 10-13 days Humidity: 80-85% Sunshine: 7-8 hours per day

What to expect: June marks the official start of hurricane season, though hurricanes are still rare this early. Hot and humid with frequent afternoon rain showers.

Water is beautifully warm – perfect for swimming! This is the low season with the lowest prices of the year. Sargassum seaweed can be heavy. Whale shark season is in full swing.

Best for: Budget travelers, whale shark tours, hot-weather-tolerant visitors, off-season deals, and avoiding crowds.

July Weather in Cancun

Temperature: Highs 91-93°F (33-34°C), Lows 76-77°F (24-25°C) Sea Temperature: 84-85°F (29°C) Rainfall: 100-150mm (4-6 inches) Rainy Days: 10-12 days Humidity: 80-85% Sunshine: 8-9 hours per day

What to expect: One of the hottest months in Cancun! Very hot and humid with regular afternoon rain showers. Summer vacation brings more tourists than June, but still far fewer than in winter. Prices remain low with good deals available. Hurricane risk is low but increasing. Water temperature is at its warmest – feels like a bath!

Best for: Family summer vacations, warm water activities, budget travel, whale shark season, and tolerating heat and humidity.

August Weather in Cancun

Temperature: Highs 91-95°F (33-35°C), Lows 76-77°F (24-25°C) Sea Temperature: 84-85°F (29°C) Rainfall: 140-180mm (5-7 inches) Rainy Days: 11-14 days Humidity: 82-88% Sunshine: 8-9 hours per day

What to expect: The hottest month in Cancun with intense heat and humidity. Hurricane season picks up – August sees more tropical storm activity. Frequent rain showers, usually in late afternoon or evening.

Many consider August the low season, and sometimes you can, in fact, find great prices. However, this is when families travel the most, which is why for a family-friendly hotel you may find higher rates. The weather is not ideal as the heat and humidity combo can be challenging. It’s definitely not the best time to visit ruins as it will be extremely hot and humid.

But it’s the best time of the year to swim with whale sharks.

Best for: Budget travelers, those who love hot weather, low season deals, whale sharks tours, indoor activities with AC breaks.

September Weather in Cancun

Temperature: Highs 90-93°F (32-34°C), Lows 75-76°F (24°C) Sea Temperature: 84-85°F (29°C) Rainfall: 180-220mm (7-9 inches) Rainy Days: 13-16 days Humidity: 82-90% Sunshine: 7-8 hours per day

What to expect: The wettest and stormiest month in Cancun. Peak hurricane season with the highest risk of tropical storms. Heavy rainfall is common, though still usually in short bursts. Very hot and extremely humid. This is the absolute cheapest time to visit with rock-bottom prices and minimal crowds. Many businesses may close for maintenance.

Best for: Extreme budget travelers, those willing to gamble on weather, avoiding all crowds, absolute lowest prices.

October Weather in Cancun

Temperature: Highs 88-90°F (31-32°C), Lows 74-75°F (23-24°C) Sea Temperature: 83-84°F (28-29°C) Rainfall: 180-220mm (7-9 inches) Rainy Days: 12-15 days Humidity: 80-85% Sunshine: 7-8 hours per day

What to expect: Still peak hurricane season with high storm risk. One of the wettest months with frequent rain. Hot and very humid. However, late October starts seeing improvement as the wet season winds down. Still low season with excellent deals. Fewer tourists make for a quieter experience.

Best for: Budget travelers, those who don’t mind rain and heat, shoulder season toward the end of the month, and low prices.

November Weather in Cancun

Temperature: Highs 85-87°F (29-30°C), Lows 72-73°F (22-23°C) Sea Temperature: 82-83°F (28°C) Rainfall: 90-120mm (3-5 inches) Rainy Days: 8-10 days Humidity: 75-80% Sunshine: 7-8 hours per day

What to expect: The transition month from wet to dry season. The weather improves significantly throughout November, especially late in the month. Hurricane season officially ends November 30th. Temperatures cool down slightly, and humidity decreases. Rainfall has reduced considerably. Thanksgiving week brings more tourists and higher prices. A great shoulder season month!

Best for: Shoulder season deals (especially early-mid November), improving weather, fewer hurricanes, Thanksgiving getaways. November is my favorite month to travel to Cancun as you get the best of both worlds.

December Weather in Cancun

Temperature: Highs 83-85°F (28-29°C), Lows 69-71°F (21-22°C) Sea Temperature: 80-81°F (27°C) Rainfall: 75-95mm (3-4 inches) Rainy Days: 6-8 days Humidity: 72-77% Sunshine: 6-7 hours per day

What to expect: Dry season is in full swing with beautiful weather! Warm days, cooler nights, minimal rain, and plenty of sunshine. The high season begins with an increase in tourists and rising prices. Christmas and New Year’s are extremely busy with peak pricing. The weather is excellent – perfect for escaping cold winters.

Best for: Winter escape, Christmas/New Year’s celebrations, excellent beach weather, water activities, exploring ruins in comfortable temps.

The “best” time depends on what you prioritize:

For Best Weather Overall

December through April – Dry season with minimal rain, pleasant temperatures, lower humidity, and tons of sunshine. February is the absolute best weather-wise.

For Fewest Crowds

May, September, and October – Low season means you’ll have beaches and attractions mostly to yourself. September/October has the worst weather, though.

For Best Value (Budget)

June through October – Wet season and hurricane season mean rock-bottom prices on everything. September and October offer the absolute lowest rates.

For Balance of Weather and Price

November and early December or late April and early May – Shoulder season months offer decent weather, fewer crowds, and moderate pricing.

Cancun’s stunning beaches along the Hotel Zone and pristine Caribbean waters make it a paradise for swimmers and sun worshippers throughout the entire year. The warm turquoise sea maintains comfortable temperatures between 78-84°F, while the powdery white sand beaches stretch for miles along the coast.

Snorkeling (best visibility December-April)

Cancun offers fantastic snorkeling opportunities at nearby reefs and cenotes, with the clearest underwater visibility occurring from December through April when seas are calmest. Popular snorkeling destinations include the underwater museum MUSA, Punta Nizuc reef, and the nearby islands of Isla Mujeres and Cozumel.

The warm shallow waters are perfect for beginners, while the diverse marine life, including colorful tropical fish, sea turtles, and rays, delights snorkelers of all experience levels.

Cancun’s Hotel Zone beaches are packed with water sports operators offering thrilling activities like jet skiing and parasailing for adrenaline enthusiasts. The half-hour can rent jet skis, while parasailing provides spectacular bird’s-eye views of the coastline and Nichupté Lagoon.

Kayaking is popular both in the calm lagoon waters and along the Caribbean coast, with rentals readily available at most beach areas.

Paddleboarding and kayaking

Stand-up paddleboarding has become increasingly popular in Cancun’s calm lagoon waters and protected beach areas, offering a peaceful way to explore the coastline.
