How to Get to Playa Delfines from Cancun Downtown
The airport is about 14 km from Playa Delfines, a 15 to 20 minute drive; it is actually the closest stretch of Hotel Zone beach to the airport.
There are several ways to reach Playa Delfines from Cancun Downtown:
Get to Playa Delfines By Car
You can absolutely rent a car in Cancun and drive around at your own pace, which is my favorite way to do it. Take Boulevard Kukulcan (the main road in the Hotel Zone) and head to Kilometer 20. There is ample parking available at the beach.
My favorite place to find a convenient car rental is Discover Cars where you can compare prices and pick the best deal.
Get to Playa Delfines By Bus
Using a public bus to get to Playa Delfines is also an option. Take the R1 or R2 buses (marked “Zona Hotelera”) and get off at the Playa Delfines stop. Buses run frequently along Boulevard Kukulcan.
You will get off on the other side of the road. Make sure you look at both sides before crossing and be very careful because on that road, cars are traveling at a high speed.
From Playa Delfines to Cancun, the bus will be right in front of the beach on your side of the road.
R1 and R2 run very frequently all day and night, but I would suggest avoiding the beach at night unless is right in front of your hotel and with a security guard on duty.
Cancun is safe for tourists, but you should also avoid risky situations.

Get to Playa Delfines By Taxi
Taxis are available in Cancun and can drop you off directly at Playa Delfines. Keep in mind that if you catch a taxi in the hotel zone prices will be astronomically expensive compared to a taxi caught in Downtown Cancun.
Also if you catch a taxi in downtown Cancun, he can take you to Playa Delfines but he is not allowed to pick you up and take you back because this is the territory of the Hotel Zone Taxis. These seem like weird rules, but are unwritten rules and those who don’t abide may incur unpleasant accidents.
Get to Playa Delfines By Uber
Yes, you can get to Playa Delfines by Uber, but you can’t call an Uber from Playa Delfines, for the same reason mentioned above about Taxis. Uber in Cancun is available now but with certain conditions. Feel free to read my article for more details.

How to get to Playa Delfines from the Cancun airport
If you are coming straight from the Airport to Dolphin Beach, you also have different transportation options.
Airport Private Shuttle
This is the best and fastest hassle-free way to get from Cancun to Dolphin Beach. I use Cancun Airport Transportation Service and they are great. Professional staff, comfortable vans, and always on time.

By Car
If your intention is to drive around Cancun and the Yucatan Peninsula, then renting a car is the best option as it saves money and time, while you can visit all the top destinations at your own pace. I love driving in Cancun and the surroundings and making my own schedule.
Check out Discover Cars platform for the best deals.
By Bus
Getting the public bus from the Airport to Dolphin Beach is a bit more complicated and time-consuming. You will need to take the ADO bus from the airport to the Cancun Downtown ADO Bus terminal. From there, you will have to walk to Avenida Kukulcan (about a 10-minute walk) and take R1 or R2 from there.
Keep in mind that Cancun Airport is closer to Dolphin Beach than Cancun Bus Terminal, and also the opposite way, so this option, will make you waste a lot of precious time.
By Taxi
This could be another option but taxis at the airport are outrageously expensive so it would be cheaper with the Cancun Airport Transportation Service.
How to get to Playa Delfines from Playa del Carmen
Playa del Carmen is located 40 miles south of Playa Delfines. To get there, the above-mentioned options from the Airport also apply. Renting a car remains the most convenient way to get to Dolphin Beach.
Things to Do in Playa Delfines
1. Enjoy the Beach
Playa Delfines is renowned for it’s the widest, most photogenic beach in the Hotel Zone with soft, powdery sand and inviting waters. Spend a relaxing day under the sun, swim in the Caribbean Sea, or simply stroll along the shoreline while taking in the stunning surroundings.
Yes, you can rent beach lounges and sunshades. Since the prices may vary, you should ask the local vendors for more precise and up-to-date information.

2. Enjoy the Views from the Mirador
Playa Delfines boasts an iconic Mirador (lookout point) offering panoramic views of the beach and the Caribbean Sea. This elevated spot is perfect for capturing stunning photographs, especially during sunrise and sunset.
3. Sunrise at Playa Delfines
If you do one early morning in Cancun, do it here. Arrive 20 to 30 minutes before sunrise (check the exact time; roughly 6-7 am depending on season), take the Mirador stairs, and you will usually share the view with a handful of surfers and nobody else. Photographers: the Cancun sign is nearly empty at this hour, the light on the turquoise shallows is at its best within the first hour, and a polarizing filter earns its place in your bag. By 9 am the tour buses arrive and the moment is gone.
4. Take a Picture by the Cancun Colorful Sign
An emblematic feature of Playa Delfines is the colorful “Cancun” sign located near the beach. It’s a popular spot for taking photographs, and visitors often pose in front of vibrant letters to create lasting memories of their trip.

5. Take a stroll on the beach
Beyond sunbathing and swimming, taking a leisurely stroll along Playa Delfines allows you to immerse yourself in the tranquil ambiance and enjoy the sound of the waves crashing on the shore.
6. Snorkel by Punta Nizuc
Not many people know that there is a great snorkeling spot in Cancun, right at the end of the Cancun beach in front of the Club Med Hotel. You can easily walk there from Playa Delfines which is the closest public beach entrance.
Snorkeling along the rocks at the end of the sandy beach, you can see some interesting marine life underwater.
Also there the water is usually calm with less current.
If you go in the evening in August, you may also see baby turtles while they are released from the hotel’s safety guards, along the coast near Playa Delfines.

Things to do near Playa Delfines
7. Visit El Rey Archaeological Site
For history enthusiasts, a visit to the nearby El Rey Archaeological Site is a must. Located just a short distance from Playa Delfines, this ancient Mayan ruin site showcases well-preserved structures and provides insight into the region’s fascinating history.

8. Cancun Maya Museum
Learn more about the rich history and culture of the region at the Cancun Maya Museum. The museum displays an impressive collection of Mayan artifacts and archaeological finds.
The museum is located at 5-minute drive or a 20-minute walk on the Boulevard Kukulkan (Google Map)
9. Visit Plaza La Isla
Plaza La Isla Cancun is a vibrant and upscale shopping center located in the heart of Cancun’s Hotel Zone. With its beautiful waterfront setting, the plaza offers a mix of luxury boutiques, restaurants, entertainment options, and stunning views of Nichupte Lagoon, especially at sunset.

Restaurants near Playa Delfines
In Playa delfines, there are no restaurants, but you may find some beach vendors. I wouldn’t trust them, to be honest, not only for the doubtful hygienic conditions in which the food was prepared, but also for the strong heat that is not ideal for conserving its freshness.
But worry not, here are a few restaurants within walking distance from the beach.
The honest picture: there are no restaurants on Playa Delfines itself, so plan around it. Either eat before you come, bring a picnic (my usual move for a sunrise session), or walk or take a short taxi to one of these:
Navios
Navios is the upscale option, a lounge-restaurant on the Nichupte Lagoon side about 2 km from the beach. Go for a long lunch or an early dinner on the deck over the water; it is the kind of place where you arrive sandy from the beach and nobody minds, but the sunset view feels like a special occasion.
El Galeon Del Caribe
El Galeon Del Caribe is the local pick, an affordable Mexican seafood spot also on the lagoon. This is where I would send you for ceviche and a cold beer after a beach morning: honest portions, honest prices, and a terrace that catches the late-afternoon light on the water.
Subway
Subway sounds unremarkable, and it is, but it earns its place here for one specific job: grab a sandwich on your way to the beach, because carrying your own food beats anything you will find once you are on the sand.
If you are staying at one of the resorts beside the beach, their restaurants are the closest tables of all; and for a proper restaurant crawl, the best concentration is a short ride north along the boulevard, covered in my guide to the restaurants in the Cancun Hotel Zone.

What About Sargassum?
Playa Delfines is on the open ocean side, so in sargassum season (roughly May through September, varying by year) it gets its share of seaweed some weeks and stays clear on others; conditions change daily with wind and currents.
Check the day’s situation before committing your morning [link “the day’s situation” to a live Sargassum map you trust, or your post], and if the beach is covered, my guide on what to do when Sargassum hits has the alternatives. In winter, this is a non-issue.

Can You See Dolphins from Dolphin Beach?
Despite its name, “Playa Delfines,” which translates to “Dolphin Beach,” it is not a location where dolphins are commonly seen swimming in the wild.
The name likely originated from the dolphins that were occasionally spotted in the waters nearby many years ago.
While dolphins may still be seen offshore on rare occasions, it is not guaranteed, and visitors should not expect to see dolphins at Playa Delfines during their visit.
We also recommend you avoid places to swim with dolphins where they are kept in captivity, please. Read the post to understand why.
What is a fun fact about Playa Delfines?
The real fun fact is the opposite of what many websites claim: Playa Delfines faces east, which makes it one of the best places in Cancun to watch the SUNRISE over the Caribbean. I used to go before work with a surfboard and watch it light up the water. The Mirador at dawn, before the tour buses arrive at the Cancun sign, is the single best free experience in the Hotel Zone.
However, if you go at sunset, sometimes you can see the sky turning into a pinkish color even if the sun sets on the opposite side.
Do you have to pay to go to Playa Delfines?
No, you do not have to pay to go to Playa Delfines. As mentioned earlier, Playa Delfines is a public beach with no entrance fee.
