The island’s small scale and accessibility make it perfect for day trips or short getaways. If you’re staying in Cancún and want a quick island escape, Isla Mujeres is the easiest choice.

Cozumel, on the other hand, is located off the coast of Playa del Carmen. Getting there requires a ferry ride that takes around 45 minutes, or a direct flight to Cozumel International Airport if you’re arriving from within Mexico or the U.S.
Because Cozumel is significantly larger than Isla Mujeres, you’ll need a car, scooter, or taxi to move around the island. The distances between attractions can be long, but the payoff is a much more varied landscape and more Beach Clubs and activities.
You can have a day trip to Cozumel by all means, but it will be a bit more tiresome as it requires getting to Playa del Carmen first, which is about 1 1-hour drive, before getting on the ferry to Cozumel.

Isla Mujeres is small and intimate. It measures roughly 7 km long and less than 1 km wide. The vibe here is mellow, colorful, and deeply local. It feels like a fishing village that happens to sit on a postcard-perfect beach, which can get crowded, especially on weekends.
You can explore the entire island in a day, and everything feels close-knit. The pace of life is slow, and most travelers come here to relax, sip cocktails by the beach, and soak in the sunsets. The northern part of the island is more developed with beach clubs, hotels, and restaurants, while the southern tip (Punta Sur) remains quiet and scenic, with its Iconic park, which I recommend visiting at sunset.
Cozumel
Cozumel is much larger — about 48 km long — and it offers many more things to do and exciting boat tours to explore one of the greatest coral reefs in the world. While the town of San Miguel has the usual tourist infrastructure (shops, cafes, bars), much of the island is undeveloped and wild. You’ll find remote beaches, eco parks, and less-crowded areas on the eastern side.
The atmosphere in Cozumel varies depending on where you go. The western coast near the cruise ports can get busy and commercial, but venture inland or to the east and you’ll discover peaceful hideaways and untouched nature. That is why you need a car, although many people rent a scooter as well, which can become a bit uncomfortable when it gets windy.
One time, I even rented a bike and rode around the island, which was extremely fun to do but very tiring. I don’t recommend doing this if you are not used to long-distance cycling.

Other beaches on the island, like Playa Sol and Playa Lancheros, offer quieter options for those looking to avoid crowds. Since calm waters surround Isla Mujeres, it’s also a great place for stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, and relaxing on a float.
On the eastern side of the island (facing Cancun), you can find a nice beach club where you can hang out for a few bucks and try delicious local food. I especially recommend staying on that side of the island to watch the sunset.
Cozumel
Cozumel’s beaches are more rugged and diverse. The western side of the island is where most of the swimmable beaches and beach clubs are located. These beaches tend to be rockier but offer excellent snorkeling just offshore. “El Cielo,” a sandbar with crystal-clear water and starfish, is one of the island’s most famous spots and a must-visit.
You can only reach El Cielo by tour, and if you can only pick one, this would be the one I recommend. It’s a beautiful day in the ocean, with three snorkeling spots and a longer stop at El Cielo.
The eastern coast, facing the open Caribbean Sea, is wilder and often has strong currents. While it’s not always safe for swimming, it’s perfect for beachcombing, photography, and catching the sunrise. You’ll find fewer people here and a more dramatic coastline.
