1. Cancún or Playa del Carmen? an overview
Each destination has its own personality, and the “right” choice really depends on what kind of vacation you’re after.
Cancun
Cancun’s first impression can be overwhelming in the best way possible. The Hotel Zone is a spectacle – massive resorts lining pristine beaches with water so blue it almost doesn’t look real. It’s the kind of place where you can stay at your all-inclusive resort and never run out of things to do.
For a reason is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, and it’s easy to see why. This paradise city on the Yucatan Peninsula is a perfect combination of sun, sand, and surf, not to mention plenty of opportunities to have fun.
Stretching along miles of white-sandy beaches, Cancun has plenty of activities for visitors to enjoy. From snorkeling and scuba diving around the Mesoamerican Reef to visiting ancient Mayan ruins, there’s always something new to explore in Cancun.
But here’s what I’m not fond of: getting around requires planning. Want to hit a restaurant downtown? You’ll need a taxi. Beach hopping? Same story. Everything is spread out, which is fine if you’re planning a resort-centric vacation, but it can feel disconnected if you want to explore.

Playa del Carmen
Playa del Carmen, on the other hand, won me over with its walkability. I loved being able to roll out of my hotel, grab coffee at a local café, walk to the beach, then stroll down Quinta Avenida (5th Avenue) for dinner – all without needing a car or taxi.
The town has this laid-back, bohemian vibe that makes it easy to feel like a local rather than just a tourist. However, I’ll be honest: the beaches in the town center can be hit-or-miss. Some days the water is crystal clear and wide, other days it’s murky, and with little space to lie down because the high tide has swept away the sand.

My own brief consideration
If you want the classic Mexican Caribbean resort experience with world-class beaches and don’t mind relying on transportation, Cancun delivers. If you prefer a more intimate, walkable town where you can easily explore local culture and have quick access to cenotes and Cozumel, Playa del Carmen is your spot.
My honest recommendation? If it’s your first time in the area and you’re looking for that picture-perfect beach vacation with all the amenities, start with Cancun. If you’ve been to Cancun before or you’re the type who likes to wander and discover, Playa del Carmen offers a more authentic experience. And if you have the time? Spend a few days in each – they’re only an hour apart, after all.
Throughout this guide, I’ll share specific insights from my time in both destinations to help you make the best choice for your vacation style.
In Playa del Carmen, you can also find the same activities, as both cities are about 1 hour apart.
In both locations you can find impressive luxury resorts and spas to charming boutique hotels and clubs, visitors will find everything they need to make their stay enjoyable in Playa del Carmen.

2. Cancun vs Playa del Carmen – Location
Cancun location
Located on the eastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, Cancun has alluring beaches, crystal-clear waters, and some of Mexico’s best sights and attractions.
For those who love exploring the outdoors, there are plenty of activities, such as snorkeling and swimming, in the many cenotes scattered around Cancun.
Or take a day trip to Isla Mujeres for some gorgeous views over turquoise waters.
If you’re more into city life, you can stroll through La Isla Shopping Village or visit nearby Riviera Maya to explore ancient Mayan ruins such as Tulum or Chichen Itza.
Of course, the nightlife is always an option with lively bars and clubs staying open until sunrise.
Cancun is the closest city to the Whale Sharks tours and Isla Mujeres.
Playa del Carmen location
Playa del Carmen is a popular resort town located on the Riviera Maya, about 70 km South of Cancun and 35 km of Puerto Morelos. Located along the Caribbean Sea, it is conveniently located halfway between Cancun and Tulum.
Over the past decade or so, this Mexican town has become a major tourist destination, as visitors flock to its stunning beaches and enjoy its perfect blend of culture, art, and activities.
Playa del Carmen is the city with the most strategic location, being close to many cenotes, Mayan Ruins, and amazing beaches.
Also, Playa del Carmen is only 30 minutes ferry ride from Cozumel.
If you are a diver, staying in Playa del Carmen is probably the best choice.
3. Cancun vs Playa del Carmen – Layout and Vibe
Cancun

Cancun is comprised of two distinct areas: the Hotel Zone and Downtown. The Hotel Zone boasts white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters, where visitors can relax by the shore or partake in exciting water activities such as snorkeling, jet skiing, and more.
It’s also home to many all-inclusive resorts that offer luxurious amenities such as spas, golf courses, and world-class restaurants.
Meanwhile, Downtown Cancun is nothing charming except for a couple of areas such as Avenida Nader with many interesting Restaurants, and Mercado 23 where you can find interesting stalls.
This area features bustling nightlife, world-class restaurants, vibrant markets, and cultural attractions such as museums and galleries.
In addition to its many entertainment options, Downtown Cancun also has plenty of shopping opportunities to explore.
Playa del Carmen
Playa del Carmen offers a laid-back atmosphere and plenty of activities for visitors. The town has a great layout that ensures you are never far away from the beach or other tourist attractions.
The main drag is Fifth Avenue (also known as Quinta Avenida), which runs parallel to the beach and stretches for over three miles.
The avenue is lined with bars, restaurants, galleries, and shops, and gives Playa del Carmen its distinctive feeling; it’s perfect to wander around during the day or late into the night.
There are also plenty of dining options available throughout the city center, so you can get your fill of Mexican cuisine without having to venture too far.

4. Cancun vs Playa del Carmen – Beaches
Let’s be real: beaches are probably the main reason you’re considering either destination. Both offer stunning Caribbean coastline, but the beach experience is quite different between the two. Here’s the honest breakdown.
Cancun Beaches

The Good News: Cancun’s beaches are absolutely spectacular – and I’m not exaggerating. The Hotel Zone features some of the most beautiful beaches in Mexico, with powdery white sand and water that shifts between turquoise, aquamarine, and deep blue depending on the depth and time of day.
Specific Beaches to Know:
- Playa Delfines – The most famous public beach in Cancun, wide and pristine with the iconic “Cancun” sign. Blue Flag certified for environmental quality. Great for photos, but strong currents make swimming challenging.
- Playa Tortugas – Calmer waters, family-friendly, lots of water sports. This is where many Isla Mujeres ferries depart.
- Playa Langosta – Protected by a breakwater, making it one of the calmest beaches for swimming. Great for families with young children.
- Playa Chac Mool – Popular with locals, good waves for bodyboarding, but watch for strong currents.
- Playa Marlin – Beautiful but often has rough surf and strong undertows. Better for sunbathing than swimming.
The Challenge: Here’s what many travel blogs don’t tell you: not all Cancun beaches are swimmable. From Punta Cancun southward toward Playa Delfines, the water can have dangerous currents and rough surf. Red flags are common, especially in the afternoon. The beaches are gorgeous for walking and sunbathing, but swimming can be risky. You can read my guide on the most dangerous beach hazard
Swimming-Friendly Areas: The most friendly beaches for swimming are generally from Punta Cancun northward toward downtown (Playa Tortugas, Playa Langosta, Playa Las Perlas). These beaches are more protected and have calmer waters.
Beach Access: Most of the Hotel Zone beach is occupied by large resorts. While all beaches in Mexico are technically public, accessing them can be tricky. You’ll often need to walk through a resort or find public access points which most of the time is not allowed unless you purchase a daypass.
You can read my detailed post on the best day passes in Cancun. Public beaches like Playa Delfines and Playa Tortugas are easier to access.
Beach Width: Cancun beaches are notably wide – you’ll have plenty of space to spread out, even during peak season.
Playa del Carmen Beaches

The Reality Check: Playa del Carmen’s beaches are beautiful, but they’re different from Cancun’s, and it’s important to set realistic expectations.
Specific Beaches to Know:
- Playacar Beach – Located south of the ferry pier in the residential Playacar area. This is where you’ll find the stunning turquoise water and white sand that rivals Cancun. Less crowded and more pristine than downtown beaches.
- Mamitas Beach Club – The most popular beach club in Playa del Carmen. Great atmosphere, music, food, and drinks. The beach here can get crowded but has good facilities.
- Playa 88 – Trendy beach club with a younger vibe, DJs, and pool parties.
- Playa 72 – Pet friendly beach
- Punta Esmeralda – A local favorite north of town, where a cenote meets the ocean. More natural and less developed.
The Honest Truth About Water Quality: In the downtown area near 5th Avenue, the water can be murky or brownish, especially compared to Cancun. This isn’t pollution – it’s a combination of natural sediment, seaweed (particularly sargassum during certain seasons), and the beach’s orientation. Some days it’s crystal clear; other days, not so much.
Where to Find Clear Water: Walk south toward Playacar or north toward Punta Esmeralda. The further you get from the busy downtown area, the clearer the water becomes.
Swimming Conditions: The good news: Playa del Carmen’s beaches are generally much calmer and safer for swimming than Cancun’s. The water is typically gentle with minimal currents, making it ideal for families with children.
Beach Access: This is where Playa del Carmen shines. Beach access is easy and plentiful. You can walk to the beach from anywhere in town, and there are numerous beach clubs offering chairs, umbrellas, food, and drinks for reasonable prices. Many sections of beach are completely free to access.
Beach Width: Playa del Carmen beaches are narrower than Cancun’s, especially in the downtown area. During high tide or busy periods, beach space can be limited. Sometimes it’s interrupted so if you want to take a walk you need to get back to the street and get back in on the next street. But differently to Cancun it’s very easy in Playa del Carmen because the beach access is everywhere.
Seaweed (Sargassum) Issue: Both destinations deal with sargassum seaweed, but it tends to be more noticeable in Playa del Carmen due to the narrower beaches. Resorts and beach clubs clean it regularly, but it can accumulate quickly during peak sargassum season (May-August).

Nearby Beach Gems (Playa del Carmen Advantage)
One major advantage of staying in Playa del Carmen is easy access to some of the Riviera Maya’s most beautiful beaches:
- Akumal (30 minutes south) – Famous for swimming with sea turtles, stunning bay
- Xpu-Ha (25 minutes south) – Pristine, less crowded, crystal-clear water
- Tulum Beach (45 minutes south) – Instagram-famous beaches with Mayan ruins backdrop
- Puerto Morelos (20 minutes north) – Quiet fishing village with calm, clear water
Beach Comparison Summary
| Feature | Cancun | Playa del Carmen |
|---|---|---|
| Sand Quality | Powdery white, pristine | White sand, slightly coarser |
| Water Color | Stunning turquoise/blue | Variable (clear in Playacar, murky downtown) |
| Swimming Safety | Rough surf, strong currents in many areas | Generally calm and safe |
| Beach Width | Very wide | Narrower |
| Accessibility | Challenging (resort-dominated) | Easy (multiple access points) |
| Crowds | Varies by location | Can be crowded downtown |
| Beach Clubs | Limited | Abundant and affordable |
| Nearby Beach Options | Isla Mujeres (ferry required) | Akumal, Xpu-Ha, Tulum (short drive) |
The Verdict: Which Has Better Beaches?
For Pure Beach Beauty: 🏆 Cancun wins. The Hotel Zone beaches are objectively more stunning with consistently clear, turquoise water and pristine white sand.
For Beach Experience: 🏆 Playa del Carmen wins. Easier access, calmer swimming, more beach clubs, and proximity to other beautiful beaches make for a better overall beach vacation experience.
My Recommendation: If you’re the type who wants to spend all day at one perfect beach, choose Cancun (and book a resort with beach access). If you prefer beach hopping, easy access, safe swimming, and variety, choose Playa del Carmen.
5. Cancun vs Playa del Carmen – Cenotes Access
One of the most magical experiences in the Yucatan Peninsula is swimming in cenotes – natural sinkholes filled with crystal-clear freshwater that were sacred to the ancient Maya. If cenote exploration is on your bucket list, your choice between Cancun and Playa del Carmen makes a significant difference.
Cenotes from Cancun
Distance: The nearest cenotes are approximately 40-50 minutes from Cancun’s Hotel Zone. The closest cenotes to Cancun are in Puerto Morelos, where you can find the so called “ruta de los cenotes” of which I talk about in my detailed post on the Cenotes near Cancun.
Here are some of the most popular cenotes near Cancun:
- Cenote Siete Bocas (near Puerto Morelos) – 35 minutes
- Ruta de los Cenotes (cenote route) – 40-50 minutes
- Cenote Azul (near Playa del Carmen) – 50 minutes
- Gran Cenote (near Tulum) – 1.5 hours
The Reality: While you can absolutely visit cenotes from Cancun, you’ll need to dedicate more travel time. Most cenote tours from Cancun are full-day excursions that combine multiple stops because of the distance. This isn’t necessarily bad – it just means cenote visits require more planning and time commitment.
Best Option: Book an organized tour like the Tulum, Cenote, and Caves Tour that handles transportation and visits multiple sites in one day.
Cenotes from Playa del Carmen
Distance: Multiple cenotes are just 15-25 minutes from Playa del Carmen’s center
Best Cenotes Near Playa del Carmen:
- Cenote Azul – 20 minutes (open-air, great for families)
- Cenote Cristalino – 20 minutes (crystal-clear water, cliff jumping)
- Cenote Kantun-Chi – 15 minutes (cave cenote with stalactites)
- Cenote Chaak Tun – 10 minutes (underground cave system)
- Gran Cenote (near Tulum) – 45 minutes
- Dos Ojos – 45 minutes (famous for cave diving)
The Advantage: From Playa del Carmen, you can easily visit cenotes on your own by renting a car or taking a colectivo (shared van). You could even visit a cenote in the morning and be back for lunch on 5th Avenue. This flexibility means you can fit cenote visits around your other activities rather than dedicating an entire day.
Best Option: Rent a car and visit 2-3 cenotes in one morning, or book a half-day cenote tour that includes transportation.
Cenote Diving
If you’re interested in cenote diving (one of the world’s most unique diving experiences), Playa del Carmen is the clear winner. The town is the cenote diving capital of the world, with numerous dive shops offering guided cenote dives.
Popular Cenote Dive Sites from Playa del Carmen:
- Dos Ojos
- The Pit
- Taj Mahal
- Angelita
- Casa Cenote
Most cenote dive operators are based in Playa del Carmen, and while you can book cenote dives from Cancun, you’ll spend extra time in transportation.
The Verdict: Cenotes Winner
🏆 Winner: Playa del Carmen
If cenotes are a priority for your trip, Playa del Carmen’s central location on the Riviera Maya gives you significantly better access. You’ll save time, have more flexibility, and can easily visit multiple cenotes during your stay. From Cancun, cenote visits are still possible but require more planning and travel time.
Pro Tip: If you’re staying in Cancun but cenotes are a must-do, consider taking a day trip to Playa del Carmen and visiting 2-3 cenotes in the area before heading back. You’ll get the best of both worlds.
6. Cancun vs Playa del Carmen – The best time to visit
Best time to visit Cancun
The best time to visit Cancun depends on what type of experience you’re looking for. From December to April, temperatures remain comfortable during the day while nights can get a bit chilly, making it ideal for beach days or exploring nearby attractions.
This time of the year also offers tourists a great chance to take part in exciting activities such as snorkeling, kayaking, and deep-sea fishing.
The downside is that it’s also peak tourist season, so prices and crowds are likely to be higher than usual.
On the other hand, the summer months (June-September) have the advantage of higher water temperatures but also bring a high level of humidity and the highest temperatures.
Also, that is the season for the sargass,o which has been visiting the Mexican Caribbean Coasts in the past few summers.
The shoulder season, which includes late April and May as well as October and November, is considered by many to be the best time to visit Cancun due to several factors.
For starters, visiting during these months means avoiding peak tourist season. Prices for flights and hotel rooms tend to decrease during these months since there are fewer tourists in town, meaning more savings for travelers.
Additionally, temperatures tend to be milder during this period than in the low season, and there are still plenty of activities to enjoy.

Best time to visit Playa del Carmen
Since Cancun and Playa del Carmen are located so close to each other, the recommendations for the best time to visit Cancun also apply to Playa del Carmen.
December through April offer the best weather and lowest chance of precipitation; however, these months are also among the busiest times of the year due to peak season travel.
If you don’t mind a little rain, May, June, and September through November can be great times to go – there will be fewer tourists and lower prices at hotels and attractions.
However, keep in mind that hurricane season is active from August through November, so if you want to travel during this time, you should book at the last minute and check the weather forecast before.

For general watersports variety, both destinations deliver, but Cancun has more options for adrenaline activities.
8. Cancun vs Playa del Carmen – Walkability and Getting around
One of the biggest practical differences between Cancun and Playa del Carmen is how you’ll get around during your stay. This might not seem like a big deal when planning, but it significantly impacts your daily experience and budget.
Cancun: Car/Taxi Dependent
The Reality: Cancun is not a walkable destination. The Hotel Zone stretches about 14 miles along a narrow strip, and downtown Cancun is 15-20 minutes away by car. Unless you’re planning to stay at your resort for the entire trip, you’ll need transportation for almost everything.
Getting Around Cancun:

Walking in Cancun:

- Verdict: Not practical for getting around
Daily Transportation Budget:

Daily Transportation Budget:
- Walking only: $0
- Occasional taxi: $5-10 per day
- With rental car for day trips: $30-50 per day
When You’ll Need a Car
Cancun:
- Daily, unless staying at resort only
- Day trips to ruins, cenotes, other towns
- Beach hopping
- Restaurant hopping
Playa del Carmen:
- Day trips to cenotes (though tours are available)
- Visiting Tulum, Coba, Chichen Itza
- Exploring multiple beaches in one day
- NOT needed for daily activities in town
The Verdict: Walkability & Transportation Winner
🏆 Playa del Carmen wins decisively
Why it matters:
- Save money: $20-50+ per day on transportation
- Spontaneity: See a restaurant you like? Just walk in. No need to plan transportation.
- Exercise: Natural walking keeps you active
- Local experience: Walking through town feels more authentic
- Convenience: No waiting for taxis, no negotiating prices
- Safety: Less time in vehicles, more control over your schedule
When Cancun’s layout works:
- All-inclusive resort vacation (you’re not leaving anyway)
- You’re renting a car for the whole trip
- You don’t mind budgeting for daily taxis
- You prefer resort-based activities
My Recommendation: If walkability and easy access to restaurants, shops, and nightlife matter to you, Playa del Carmen is the clear winner. The ability to walk everywhere is one of the town’s biggest advantages and something you’ll appreciate multiple times every single day. In Cancun, you’ll spend time and money on transportation that you could be spending on experiences.
9. Cancun vs Playa del Carmen – costs
Cancun cost
The cost of a 7-day trip to Cancun can vary greatly depending on your budget, desired accommodation type, travel dates, and activities you plan on doing during your stay.
Generally speaking, airfare from the United States will cost $500- $800 per person from the main hubs.
Lodging at a hotel or in an all-inclusive resort may range from $1,000 to $2,500 for seven nights (separate from airfare) for two people.
If you’re on a budget, a much cheaper option would be to stay at an affordable hotel in the downtown area and opt for home-cooked meals with groceries from local markets.
Thanks to Cancun’s popularity, there are plenty of affordable accommodations to suit all budgets.
Activities such as visiting the beach are free, and archaeological sites have minimal entrance fees.
You can also read my detailed article on Cancun costs and use the Cost Calculator to find out a tentative budget for your trip.
Playa del Carmen cost
On average, Playa del Carmen used to be relatively cheaper than Cancun, but that’s no longer the case. I am staying in Playa del Carmen as I am updating this post, and I realized how much accommodation prices have increased.
The airfare will cost the same because you’ll be flying into Cancun International Airport.
If you want to splurge, though, you can also find spectacular hotels or apartments to stay in the lap of luxury during your visit to Playa del Carmen, with a spend of $2,500-$5,000 for a 7-day visit.
This will cover accommodations at the resort as well as meals and drinks at their restaurants and bars.
Many budget hotels near the beach are available for less than $100 USD per night, with amenities such as air conditioning and free Wi-Fi.
If you prefer to stay in an Airbnb rental or private villa, prices will vary based on location and size but can range from $25-$200 USD per night.
10. Cancun vs Playa del Carmen – Food and nightlife
Both destinations offer excellent dining, but the experience and variety differ significantly. Here’s the breakdown with specific recommendations you can actually use.
Cancun
Perhaps one of the best features of Cancun is its fantastic food scene. From upscale restaurants to small street vendors, it’s a foodie’s paradise. The city’s local dishes are often rooted in Mayan traditions, utilizing fresh ingredients such as plantains and corn.
For those looking for something more familiar, there is a wide selection of international fare, including Italian, Mexican-American fusion, and more. Additionally, high-end seafood restaurants line the coast, serving fresh seafood delicacies with breathtaking views.
No matter what your palate desires, there are many excellent restaurants in Cancun offering a variety of choices. Whether you’re seeking out traditional Mexican flavors or something exotic from around the world, you’ll easily be able to find it here.
Nightlife in Cancun is also amazing for those who love clubbing. The bustling city is also home to a variety of nightclubs and bars, including upscale lounges and casual cantinas. From the famous Coco Bongo to Mandala, Vaquitas and many more.
With its numerous beach bars, you can easily find yourself dancing in the sand under the moonlight until sunrise. There are also many clubs located away from the beach that feature international DJs and some of Mexico’s best live music acts.
Cancun is in fact one of the Spring Breakers‘ favorite destinations in Mexico. But also very suitable for families and romantic getaways.
Cancun Restaurants
The Scene: Cancun’s restaurant scene is spread across two main areas: the Hotel Zone (tourist-focused, upscale) and Downtown Cancun (local, authentic, affordable). You’ll need a taxi or car to get between restaurants, as walkability is limited.

Playa del Carmen
When it comes to the food scene, though, Playa del Carmen is nothing short of delicious, with a variety of cuisines.
Most of the best restaurants are along the Quinta Avenida or nearby streets and are therefore reachable after a nice walk and a window-shopping stroll on the famous street. There are authentic local restaurants offering traditional Mexican cuisine and world-renowned establishments serving dishes from around the globe.
Enjoy freshly caught seafood on a beachfront terrace, tuck into succulent steaks at an upscale steakhouse or sample some local delicacies such as chilaquiles and empanadas – it’s up to you!
Vegetarian and vegan options are also widely and easily available throughout the city, more than in Cancun. And after dinner, why not take a stroll along 5th Avenue, where you can find plenty of bars and cafes offering refreshing cocktails and sweet desserts, including delicious homemade Gelato 🙂
Playa del Carmen is known for its vibrant nightlife as well. This party town offers an array of activities and venues to explore, from beach bars and dance clubs to rooftop terraces and live music venues.
The downtown area of Playa del Carmen features many chic and hip clubs. These are great options for anyone looking for a wild night out with drinks flowing until dawn. Also the popular Coco Bongo offers up an exciting mix of international DJs and Latin performers every night.

11. Cancun vs Playa del Carmen – Safety
Safety in Cancun
Safety is one of the biggest concerns for tourists who are planning to visit Mexico. The overall crime rate in Cancun is relatively low, even when compared to cities in the US or Europe.
The city itself is home to one of the most significant police forces in Mexico, and there are both military and police patrols throughout the area.
CCTV cameras are also standard throughout Cancun’s busiest areas, notably along its main beache,s where security personnel will often monitor activity to ensure safety.
Additionally, many hotels and resorts have their own private security guards and additional surveillance equipment installed around their properties.
Visitors need to remember that although crime rates are low, they should still take common-sense safety precautions, such as avoiding carrying large amounts of cash or walking alone at night.
Safety in Playa del Carmen
When it comes to safety, Playa del Carmen is just as safe as Cancun. To begin with, the town has a very low rate of violent crime.
Most crimes that do occur are related to pickpocketing and petty theft from tourists who are not aware of their surroundings or fail to take necessary precautions when out and about in public spaces.
The authorities in Playa del Carmen have taken extra steps to ensure safety for both residents and tourists.
The local government has implemented strict public security policies, and law enforcement officers patrol the city day and night, ensuring travelers feel secure while enjoying all this vibrant city has to offer.
The local government has also implemented street lighting systems to make it safer for locals and visitors alike.

Cancun vs Playa del Carmen FAQs
Is Playa del Carmen better than Cancun?
It depends on what you’re looking for in a vacation. Playa del Carmen is more laid-back and relaxed than Cancun, with a unique downtown area full of shops and restaurants, and, most importantly, it’s close to the beach.
However, Cancun offers more nightlife options and more all-inclusive hotels to choose from.
Cancun is close to Isla Mujeres and Isla Contoy, whereas Playa Del Carmen is closer to Cozumel, Tulum, and many cenotes.
Ultimately, it’s up to you to decide which destination is best for your needs.
Is Playa del Carmen or Cancun safer?
Both Playa del Carmen and Cancun are relatively safe cities. In general, Playa del Carmen is considered a bit safer than Cancun due to its smaller size and lower population density, but it’s highly unlikely that visitors would encounter crime at either of these locations.
That doesn’t mean you can throw caution to the wind, however. It is important to take the same safety precautions you would in any large city while visiting either one of these cities.
Is Cancun more expensive than Playa del Carmen?
Yes, Cancun is slightly more expensive than Playa del Carmen. The cost of accommodations in Cancun can be a bit higher than in Playa del Carmen.
Why is Playa del Carmen so popular?
Playa del Carmen is a popular tourist destination due to its stunning beaches, vibrant nightlife, and variety of activities.
It’s also conveniently located near the Mayan ruins of Tulum and the eco-parks of Xcaret and Xel-Ha.
Its warm climate and access to the Caribbean Sea make it a great spot for swimming, snorkeling, and other water sports.
Playa del Carmen is also more popular among digital nomads and expats, possibly for its small-town vibe where everything is within walking distance.
Is Cancun or Playa del Carmen better for a Solo Traveler?
Both destinations are great destinations for solo travelers, and if you have the explorer bug like me, you will want to spend some time in both cities and make the most of your time there.
However, if you like to walk around in freedom and reduce the use of transportation, Playa del Carmen is probably your place.
What’s cheaper, Cancun or Playa del Carmen?
Cancun is a bit more expensive than Playa del Carmen due to its higher popularity as a tourist destination.
However, during the low season, you can find great deals in both places. It’s worth comparing prices and researching different options before booking your trip.

Cancun or Playa del Carmen, then? Final thoughts
When it comes to choosing the perfect Mexican beach destination, travelers may find themselves torn between two popular favorites: Cancun and Playa del Carmen.
Both locations boast miles of white sand beaches, crystal blue waters, and plenty of activities for visitors to enjoy. But which one should you choose?
In my opinion, it’s not an “either-or” answer. Playa del Carmen and Cancun are located close enough to each other that you can visit both and decide for yourself which city has a better vibe for you.
Both cities are only an hour’s drive away, so any time you want to visit the other, all you’ll have to do is hop in your car or catch a bus.
One thing’s for sure, no matter which of these two you pick, you’ll have a great time. There are countless opportunities for adventure, luxury, and fun at both locations, and you’ll never find yourself short of options at either of them.
