If you’re tired of the crowded beaches of Cancun, you have plenty of alternative options around Cancun and not that far. Plenty of stunning beach resorts in Mexico offer tranquility and natural beauty without the hustle and bustle. Puerto Morelos, a serene village in the Caribbean, offers clear blue waters and a much quieter atmosphere than Cancun, with great snorkeling tours available from the beach to the reef.

Not only will you avoid the large tourist crowds, but you’ll also get to experience the local culture more authentically. Playa Maroma, Isla Blanca, or el Cuyo are other amazing beaches to relax far from the madding crowd.

Getting to these hidden gems is easier than you think, and planning your stay can be as relaxing as the destinations themselves. You’ll find a variety of accommodations, from luxurious resorts to charming inns.

Isla Holbox is perfect for anyone seeking relaxation. Located off the Yucatan Peninsula, this island is free from cars and has stunning beaches. You can enjoy a laidback environment with a long and wide stretch of beach and explore its wildlife, including flamingos and whale sharks. Dine on fresh seafood while watching beautiful sunsets. It combines natural beauty with a peaceful atmosphere, making it ideal for a restful vacation.

Puerto Morelos: Fisherman’s Town Charm

Timing your visit can make a big difference in your experience. The best months to visit most Mexican beach towns are November to April. This period offers mild weather with minimal rain, more blue sky and less humidity.

However, traveling during the off-peak season, from May to October, can save you money. It’s also less crowded but can be humid and rainy. You may still find sunny days for beach activities, and hotel rates are usually lower.

Festivals and local events can also affect your travel plans. Check the local calendar to avoid crowded periods unless you want to join the celebrations. Easter is the crowdest time of the year and most popular for local vacations, which means that the hotel prices are at their highest point.

How to be a good traveler: sustainability tips

Traveling sustainably helps protect the environment and benefits local communities. Stay at eco-friendly hotels that use renewable energy and minimize waste.

Use reusable water bottles and bags to reduce plastic waste. Even better if it’s a filter bottle so that you can consume tap water and stay constantly hydrated.

Exploring alternative beach resorts to Cancun can be an adventure. You can easily navigate these destinations by rental car or local bus service.

Moving around By car

Renting a car is my favorite way to explore the area. It’s very safe, and it offers the most flexibility. It allows you to explore remote beaches and hidden gems at your own pace. Renting a car in Mexico is straightforward; bigger cities and airports like Cancun have multiple rental agencies. Costs average around $40 per day including insurance. I recommend the Discover Cars platform, where you can compare car rentals for prices and rental conditions. Keep in mind that the cheapest car is not always the most convenient. Make sure you read through the fine print.

Road conditions can vary. Major highways are usually well-maintained, but rural roads may be rough or poorly marked. Having GPS or a reliable map app is essential. If you decide to rent a car, I would recommend getting a local sim card to stay always connected and use Google Maps or Waze to find your way around.

Moving around by bus

Using the local bus system is a cost-effective way to get around. Major bus lines like ADO connect you from Cancun to other beach towns like Tulum and Playa del Carmen. Buses are frequent, comfortable, and relatively inexpensive.

Schedules can be found online or at local terminals, making it easy to plan your trips. Buses are air-conditioned, and many offer onboard restrooms.

Bus stations are usually located near the center of each town. It’s easy to walk or catch a cab to your final destination. Keep small bills on hand for bus fares and taxi rides, as larger notes may not be accepted.
