Essential Documents

When packing for a trip to Cancun, it is important to ensure you have all the necessary documents. Here are the essential documents you should pack:

Passport and Visas

If you are traveling to Cancun from another country, you will need a valid passport. It is recommended that your passport be valid for at least six months after your expected return date. Some countries may also require a visa to enter Mexico, so it is important to check the visa requirements before you travel.

Travel Insurance

If you ask me I have two recommended travel insurance companies, one is SafetyWing, which I find relatively affordable and quite comprehensive.

The other is not a company but a site aggregator, Travel Insurance Master which will help you find the perfect insurance for you. You fill out the form with the information about your profile and requirements and they select the insurance company that is a good fit.

Also, if you are a diver, you should have dive insurance for many reasons. Keep in mind that Hyperbaric chambers and hospitalization, in general, are outrageously expensive in Mexico!

Dive Assure is one of the top insurance companies for diving and we cannot recommend them enough. I am sure you have heard of them as they are one of the most popular.

I also use it for non-diving trips as they offer a discount on those ones.

Identification Cards

It is always a good idea to carry identification cards with you when traveling. This can include your driver’s license, national ID card, or any other government-issued identification. You may also want to carry a copy of your passport in case you need to provide identification while exploring Cancun.

In summary, when packing for a trip to Cancun, make sure to bring your passport and any necessary visas, purchase travel insurance, and carry identification cards with you. By having these essential documents with you, you can enjoy your trip to Cancun with peace of mind.

Here below I am sharing a great accessory to hold passport + money and other small items

Water-to-go filter water bottle

This is an absolute travel essential for me. You may already know that in Cancun the tap water is not drinkable. well, with water-to-go it is. The water-to-go bottle has a special filter that kills 99.99% of bacterias of all sorts, illness-causing contaminants, including those as small as a virus.

The water-to-go filter bottle is made out of sugar cane and the filter replaces 400 plastic bottles.

With this powerful filter, you can drink tap water in Mexico as much as you want anywhere you are, for a total of 3 months. If you are planning to stay longer, remember to purchase extra filters to replace them. You can order them also while in Mexico on Amazon Mexico or directly on the water-to-go-site.

Clothing and Footwear

When it comes to packing for a trip to Cancun, choosing the right clothing and footwear is essential. The tropical climate and beachy atmosphere make for a relaxed and casual vibe, but it’s important to be prepared for any occasion. Here are some tips for packing the right clothing and footwear for your Cancun vacation.

Beachwear

Cancun is known for its beautiful beaches, and you’ll want to make sure you have the right attire to enjoy them. Pack plenty of swimsuits, cover-ups, and beach towels. Don’t forget to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect yourself from the sun. A beach bag is also handy for carrying all your essentials.

I am just leaving some cute ideas here below

Casual Outfits

During the day, you’ll likely be exploring Cancun attractions, malls, mayan ruins, museums, or simply lounging by the pool. Pack lightweight and comfortable clothing such as shorts, t-shirts, and sundresses.

Cotton and linen are great fabric choices as they are breathable and keep you cool in the hot and humid weather. A light jacket or sweater may come in handy for cooler evenings.

Evening Attire

While Cancun is a casual destination, there are some occasions when you may want to dress up a bit. For example, if you plan on going to a nice restaurant or attending a show.

Pack a few dressier outfits such as sundresses, skirts, or slacks paired with a blouse.

Men can opt for a collared shirt and dress pants. Don’t forget to pack comfortable shoes for walking around at night.

Here below some ideas 😎

Footwear Selection

When it comes to footwear, comfort is key. Pack a pair of sturdy walking shoes for walking around, go on tours, and visiting attractions. Flip flops or sandals are perfect for the beach and pool. If you plan on going out at night, pack a pair of dressier shoes such as wedges or loafers. Don’t forget to pack socks if you plan on doing any outdoor activities such as hiking or zip-lining.

Overall, packing the right clothing and footwear for your Cancun vacation is essential for enjoying all that this beautiful destination has to offer. With these tips in mind, you’ll be prepared for any activity or occasion that comes your way.

Here below some nice ideas.

Beach and Swimming Gear

Swimsuits

Cancun is famous for its beaches, and amazing hotels with pools, so packing the right swimwear is essential. Visitors should bring at least two swimsuits to ensure they always have a dry option. Women may want to consider a one-piece swimsuit or a bikini with a cover-up for when they are not in the water.

Men can opt for swim trunks or board shorts. It is advisable to choose swimsuits made of quick-drying material, such as nylon or polyester.

Beach Towels

A beach towel is a must-have item for any trip to Cancun. Most hotels provide beach towels, but it is always a good idea to bring one or two of your own. Microfiber towels are a great option as they are lightweight, compact, and dry quickly, however, the popular Turkish cotton towels are much cuter.

Snorkeling Equipment

Cancun is known for its crystal-clear waters and abundant marine life, making snorkeling a popular activity. Visitors can rent snorkeling gear at many beachside vendors, but bringing your equipment is a great way to save money and ensure a proper fit, and definitely more hygienic. Snorkeling gear includes a mask, snorkel, and fins, but you can get fins there.

It is important to choose a mask that fits well and does not leak. Fins should be comfortable and fit snugly to prevent blisters. I would also bring a waterproof camera to capture the stunning underwater views. I have a GoPro 10 but there are many other options available, see below.

Toiletries and Health Items

When packing for a trip to Cancun, it’s important to make sure you have all the necessary toiletries and health items. Here are some essential items that should be included in your packing list:

Personal Hygiene Products

It’s important to pack personal hygiene products such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, soap, and deodorant. These items are readily available in Cancun, but it’s always better to bring your preferred brand to avoid any discomfort.

Sun Protection

Cancun is known for its sunny weather, and it’s important to protect your skin from the harmful UV rays. Pack sunscreen with at least SPF 30, lip balm with SPF, and a hat or cap. Sunglasses are also a must to protect your eyes from the bright sunlight.

Medications and First Aid

It’s always better to be prepared for any medical emergencies while on vacation. Pack any necessary medications such as allergy medicine, pain relievers, and motion sickness pills. Consult your doctor for that.

But also remember that prevention is much better, so stay away from tap water, and protect your skin from the sun, even when it’s not shining, it still affects your skin.

It’s also a good idea to bring a small first aid kit with band-aids, antiseptic wipes, and insect repellent.

Overall, it’s important to pack the necessary toiletries and health items to ensure a comfortable and safe trip to Cancun.

Electronics and Accessories

Get a local SIM card

Having a local sim will help you save a lot of cash as well. Check with your local provider how much will the roaming costs you and then compare it with a local SIM CARD – I have always been using Telcel because it’s the one with the widest coverage.
Getting a Mexican sim card is particularly useful when you rent a car or go out to explore by bus. It allows you to stay connected and not only share your adventure in real time but call for help in case of emergency.

Smartphone and Charger

A smartphone is an essential item for most travelers, and it’s no different when visiting Cancun. It can be used to stay in touch with friends and family, navigate the city, and take photos. A charger is also a must-have item to ensure that the smartphone stays powered up throughout the day.

It’s recommended to bring a portable charger as well, especially if you plan on being out and about for an extended period. This will ensure that you can charge your phone on the go and won’t have to worry about running out of battery.

I have the Anker and it was great but it’s not compatible with the iPhone 15 for which I had to buy a magnetic charger. However, it’s my understanding that the latest version does work with the iPhone 15. Make sure you check it’s compatible with your phone brand and model, before buying.

Camera Equipment

Cancun is a beautiful destination with plenty of photo opportunities, so it’s recommended to bring a camera or other equipment to capture those moments. A high-quality camera will allow you to take stunning photos of the beaches, the city, and the local culture.

It’s also a good idea to bring a waterproof camera or a waterproof case for your camera, especially if you plan on spending time in the water. This will allow you to take photos while swimming or snorkeling without worrying about damaging your camera.

Power Adapters

If you’re traveling from outside of Mexico, it’s important to bring a power adapter to ensure that your electronics can be charged. Mexico uses a different type of electrical outlet than many other countries, so it’s important to make sure that you have the right adapter.

It’s recommended to bring a universal adapter that can be used in multiple countries, as this will ensure that you can use it on future trips as well. It’s also a good idea to bring multiple adapters if you have multiple devices that need to be charged.

If you are coming from the US you don’t have to worry about it, because we have the same power outlet in Mexico. Otherwise, make sure you have an adapter before getting to Mexico so you don’t have to waste your vacation time searching for one.

Travel Comfort and Convenience

Travel Pillows

Having a comfortable travel pillow can make all the difference when it comes to long flights or car rides. A good travel pillow will provide neck support and prevent stiffness or soreness.

There are many different types of travel pillows available, including inflatable, memory foam, and microbead.

Inflatable pillows are lightweight and easy to pack, while memory foam pillows offer more support and can be compressed for packing. Microbead pillows are soft and flexible, conforming to the shape of your neck.

Luggage Organizers

Keeping your luggage organized can save you time and hassle during your trip. Packing cubes are a popular option for separating clothing and accessories, allowing you to easily find what you need without having to dig through your entire suitcase. Compression bags can also be useful for maximizing space in your luggage.

They allow you to compress your clothing and create more room for other items. Shoe bags are another useful organizer, keeping your shoes separate from the rest of your belongings and preventing them from getting dirty.

Luggage Locks

Always a good idea to lock your suitcase.

Travel Guides

A good travel guide can be an invaluable resource when planning your trip to Cancun. It can provide information on local attractions, restaurants, and activities, as well as tips on navigating the area. Some popular travel guides for Cancun include Lonely Planet, Fodor’s.

This site also has everything you need to know about Cancun. I am also working on a downloadable travel guide that you can read offline and without ads. (shoot me an email if you are interested)

Money and Finances

Cash and Credit Cards

When traveling to Cancun, it’s important to have a plan for your money and finances. While credit cards are widely accepted, it’s always a good idea to have some cash on hand for smaller purchases and tipping. ATMs are readily available, but it’s important to check with your bank beforehand to ensure that your card will work internationally and to avoid any unexpected fees.

In terms of credit cards, Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted, while American Express is less commonly accepted. It’s a good idea to notify your credit card company of your travel plans beforehand to avoid any issues with fraud alerts or card freezes.

Keep in mind also that withdrawing US$ from local machines comes at a high cost. It’s more convenient to withdraw Mexican pesos directly.

Currency Exchange Info

The official currency of Mexico is the Mexican peso. While many places in Cancun accept US dollars, it’s often at a less favorable exchange rate. It’s recommended to exchange some cash for pesos at a bank or currency exchange booth upon arrival to ensure that you have local currency for purchases and tipping.

It’s important to be aware of the current exchange rate and any fees associated with currency exchange. Some banks may have better exchange rates than others, so it’s worth doing some research beforehand to ensure that you’re getting the best deal possible. Additionally, it’s important to be cautious of any scams or fraudulent exchange practices. Never exchange currency with random strangers on the road.

What not to bring to Cancun

Avoid Heavy Books

Carrying heavy books can be cumbersome and take up valuable space in your luggage. Instead, opt for electronic alternatives like a Kindle to enjoy your reading without the added weight.

Limit the Cash You Carry

While it’s essential to have Mexican pesos for tipping and purchases, avoid carrying an excessive amount of cash that could be unsafe if lost. You can always withdraw more from ATMs as needed.

Leave Expensive Jewelry Behind

Given the presence of pickpockets in Cancun, it’s wise to avoid bringing expensive jewelry that may attract unwanted attention. If necessary, opt for inexpensive accessories to enhance your outfits.

Skip Bulky Clothing

Cancun’s climate is warm throughout the year, so packing heavy, warm clothing is unnecessary. However, if traveling during winter (December to February), consider a sweater or shawl for evenings or a windbreaker for boat trips.

Steer Clear of Bringing Fruit

Customs regulations prohibit bringing fruit into Mexico, so it’s best to leave such items at home. Avoid unnecessary delays during customs checks by refraining from packing fruits or vegetables.

Choose Quick-Drying Fabrics

Cancun’s hot and humid weather can pose challenges for drying fabrics. Pack clothing made of materials that dry quickly and resist mold growth. This ensures your items stay fresh and ready for use throughout your stay.

Cancun packing list: final thoughts

I hope this packing list helped you determine what to bring and what not to bring to Cancun. Think of what kind of vacation you want to have and what activities you are planning to do, and pack accordingly.
