Can You Take an Uber From Cancun Airport? The Truth in 2026 (+ Best Alternatives)
Can you take an Uber from Cancun Airport? The short answer is: don’t count on it.
In 2024, a judge ruled that Uber could legally operate at Cancun Airport, and Uber even launched a product called “Uber Taxi” to connect passengers with airport-authorized drivers. Sounds promising — but here’s the reality on the ground: Uber drivers are still afraid to go to the airport.
The taxi union’s hostility toward rideshare drivers hasn’t gone away. Drivers face intimidation, threats, and confrontations if they’re caught picking up passengers at CUN. So while the app may technically show availability, most drivers simply won’t risk it.
I have been living in Cancun for over 12 years, and I can tell you firsthand: relying on Uber at the airport is still a gamble you don’t want to take on day one of your vacation.
In this post I’ll explain the current Uber situation in detail, cover the best four alternatives to get from the airport to your hotel stress-free, and tell you what apps actually work once you’re in the city.

⚠️ 2025/2026 Update — Uber at Cancun Airport Despite a legal ruling in 2024 authorizing Uber to operate at Cancun International Airport, the situation on the ground remains the same. Uber drivers are still reluctant to pick up at CUN due to ongoing pressure and intimidation from the local taxi union. Even with the new “Uber Taxi” product launched by the app, drivers are afraid to show up at the airport. Do not rely on Uber for your airport pickup. Use one of the alternatives below for a safe, stress-free arrival.

The Cancun Hotel Zone, also called the Zona Hotelera, is a 14-mile-long stretch of white sandy beaches. This thin stretch of land is bordered by the Caribbean Sea and the Laguna Nichupté. This impressively beautiful area is home to more than 70 hotels.
The first time you see it, it will blow your mind! This is where you will find the large all-inclusive hotels that Cancun is famous for.
If you are staying in the Hotel Zone, here are the best transportation options to get you from the airport to your hotel.
👉 Rent a car
This is my favorite option because it allows you to move around at your own pace and you can stop to all the most interesting sites at your own schedule. I recommend the Discover Cars platform, where you can compare prices and details across different car rentals and choose the one that suits your needs.
👉 Take A Private Shuttle

This is my favorite way to get from the Cancun airport to the Hotel Zone or anywhere, the private shuttle, one of the fastest and easiest ways to get from the Cancun airport to the Hotel Zone.
One of the staff members will be waiting for you at the airport exit and will call the driver to pick you up and take you to your hotel in no time!
The great part of having a private shuttle is that you do not have to wait for any other guests.
A private shuttle for 1-3 guests will cost around $39 to your hotel. So although it may seem pricey for one person (but still worth it) if you are a party of 2 or 3 it will come out very convenient.
Once you make your reservation, you will receive your confirmation via email and instructions on where you will meet your host, which is different for every terminal. So make sure you read the instructions.

Below this part, you will find all the instructions, including where to find your host:

👉 Take A Shared Shuttle
If you want to save money but avoid using public transportation, a shared shuttle is a great option. The driver will be waiting for you at the airport, and you will share a ride to the Cancun Hotel Zone.
The driver will drop guests off at their respective hotels. Where your hotel is on the route will determine how long your ride will be. Shared shuttles cost $10.
👉 ADO Public Bus
You can take the ADO public bus from the Cancun airport to downtown Cancun. The bus costs around $5. You have two choices of where to buy bus tickets: you can get them inside. Look for a red desk near the car rental desks.
Or, you can buy it outside at a stand where the bus pulls up. It will take you to downtown Cancun; from there, you will either need to take a taxi to your hotel or hop on a public bus (R1 or R2) to the Hotel Zone.
It might be tempting to “save money” and take the ADO bus into town, but I do not recommend this option. The public buses pass all four Cancun airport terminals before heading to downtown Cancun.
From there, you will still need to get back to the Hotel Zone, which is at least 20 minutes. If you are on a budget and heading to the Hotel Zone, I recommend using the shared shuttle.

👉 Use Taxi Services
In a pinch, you can take a taxi from the airport to the hotel zone. This will usually cost you around $50. I recommend having a plan before arriving at the airport (such as a reservation with a shuttle).
Taxi drivers at the airport will aggressively try to sell you a trip with them, but it is more expensive than the other transportation options.
They will often try to convince you to pay more, and you will have to work hard to negotiate a price with them. I recommend that you avoid this stress and take a private shuttle instead.
How to get from Cancun Airport to Isla Mujeres
To get to Isla Mujeres from Cancun, you need to get to one of the ferry docks, either in Puerto Juarez, Playa Tortuga or Playa Caracol.

You can purchase your ferry tickets right there. Ferry boats run from 5.30 am until 11.00 pm every 30 minutes.

Is There Uber at Cancun Airport? The Full Story
The history of Uber in Cancun is a long and complicated one, and understanding it will help you make smart decisions when you arrive.
The 2019 ruling
Back in 2019, a judge ruled that Uber could legally operate in the state of Quintana Roo, where Cancun is located. This immediately upset the local taxi union, which has long held a monopoly on transporting tourists and earns a significant income from airport pickups in particular. Taxi drivers organized to make life extremely difficult — and sometimes dangerous — for anyone driving for Uber.
The 2024 ruling and Uber Taxi launch
In 2024, a new ruling extended that authorization to include Cancun International Airport specifically. Uber responded by launching a product called Uber Taxi, designed to connect passengers with certified, airport-authorized drivers. In theory, you open the app, select Uber Taxi, enter your destination, see a fixed fare, and get assigned a driver.
Why does it still not work in practice
Here is where the law and reality diverge — and this is what most travel blogs won’t tell you, because they’re not actually here.
Uber drivers are still afraid to go to the airport. The taxi union’s pressure campaign never stopped. Drivers risk confrontations, threats, and damage to their vehicles if they’re seen picking up passengers at CUN. Because of this, very few drivers are willing to accept airport rides, and those who do may ask passengers to meet them at a discreet location outside the terminal, which is not something you want to navigate after a long international flight with your luggage.
I personally tried calling an Uber recently, and the driver asked me to sit in the front seat so it would look like a friend was picking me up, and to make sure there were no taxis nearby before confirming the ride. That’s not the relaxed start to a vacation anyone is looking for.
The bottom line: Uber at Cancun Airport exists on paper. In practice, it remains unreliable and stressful. Skip it for the airport and use one of the options below.

Is there an Uber in Cancun?
While in Cancun, you can open the Uber app, but it can be difficult to find a driver who will give you a ride.
If you successfully get a driver to accept your ride, they might ask you to confirm that there are no taxis in the area where they will pick you up.
They often also request that you sit in the front seat so that it looks like they are a friend or family member who is picking you up.
The few Uber drivers who do work tend to stay far away from taxi stations, and they are never allowed to pick you up from the airport.
There are many reasons that tourists and locals alike would like to try to use an Uber. Taxis are infamous for over-charging riders.
Even without Uber, there are several alternatives to getting from the airport to anywhere you are going on the Riviera Maya. Once at your hotel, if you do need to use a taxi, remember to always confirm the price before getting into the taxi.
Taxi drivers should have a current rate sheet with them too.
No one wants to start their vacation feeling stressed about how to get to their hotel. After arriving at the Cancun International Airport, you are ready for your vacation to begin. Keep reading to learn all the different options for getting to your hotel.
What Is the Best Uber Alternative in Cancun? Try DiDi
Once you’re at your hotel and exploring the city, you’ll want a reliable app for getting around. This is where DiDi comes in.
DiDi is a rideshare app — similar to Uber — that is widely used across Latin America. The key difference in Cancun is that taxi drivers themselves use and accept DiDi, which means there is far less conflict and confrontation compared to Uber. Fares are generally lower than taxis, and the app works well throughout the Hotel Zone and downtown Cancun.
How to use DiDi in Cancun:
- Download the DiDi app before you travel (available on iOS and Android)
- Create an account and add your payment method
- Enter your destination and confirm your ride
- Your driver will be assigned and you can track them on the map
Important: DiDi does not operate at the airport either. For your airport transfer, use one of the shuttle or private transportation options listed above. Save DiDi for getting around once you’ve checked into your hotel.
DiDi is honestly the app I recommend to anyone visiting Cancun right now. It’s easy, affordable, and you won’t have the stressful dynamic that comes with trying to use Uber near taxis.
Uber from Cancun Airport: Frequently Asked Questions
Here are answers to common questions about using Uber in Cancun.
Is Uber legal at Cancun Airport now?
Technically, yes — a 2024 legal ruling authorized Uber to operate at Cancun International Airport, and Uber launched a service called Uber Taxi for airport pickups. However, in practice, very few drivers are willing to operate there because of ongoing intimidation from the local taxi union. You may wait a very long time for a driver to accept your ride, or not find one at all. We strongly recommend booking a private shuttle in advance instead.
What is Uber Taxi at Cancun Airport?
Uber Taxi is a product launched by Uber specifically for Cancun Airport following the 2024 ruling. Instead of connecting you with independent rideshare drivers, it connects you with certified taxi drivers who have agreed to use the Uber platform. The app shows a fixed fare to your destination before you confirm the ride. While the concept is good, the reality is that most drivers remain reluctant to operate at the airport due to pressure from the taxi union. Do not rely on it for a guaranteed pickup.
Is Lyft available in Cancun?
No. Lyft does not operate in Mexico at all. Uber is the main international rideshare brand available in the country, though as explained above, its use at the Cancun Airport is still not reliable in practice. DiDi is the best rideshare app for getting around Cancun once you are at your hotel.
Is DiDi better than Uber in Cancun?
Yes, for getting around Cancun city, DiDi is the better option. It is accepted by local taxi drivers (who also use the app themselves), which means there is far less conflict compared to Uber. Fares are competitive and the app is easy to use. Neither DiDi nor Uber should be relied upon for airport pickups — use a pre-booked shuttle for that.
What is the safest way to get from Cancun Airport to my hotel?
The safest and most stress-free option is a pre-booked private shuttle. Your driver will be waiting for you at the terminal with a sign bearing your name, and will take you directly to your hotel with no negotiations, no waiting, and no surprises. For groups of 2–3 people, the cost is around $39–$44 USD one way to the Hotel Zone, making it very reasonable when split.
Can you call Uber in Cancun?
You can try. Uber is legal in the state of Quintana Roo, and your Uber app will show that the service is available in Cancun.
Due to the resistance taxi drivers put up to Uber drivers, few people want to drive for Uber in Cancun.
It can take a while to get an Uber driver to pick you up. Drivers may ask you to be sure that there are no taxis present before agreeing to give you a ride. They may also request that you sit in the front seat, so that it looks like they are your friend or family member.
Is it safe to take a cab in Cancun?
Yes, it is safe to take a taxi in Cancun. Taxi drivers have an (often deservedly) bad reputation for trying to overcharge tourists.
They can be a bit rude and pushy, but thankfully, they are safe to use. Just remember to agree on the cab fare before getting into the taxi.
You may have heard stories of taxi drivers being involved in organized crime. The taxis that work in the hotel zone rely on tourists to make money.
They keep their taxis in good working order and cannot afford to have tourists report them for bad behavior.
Can I use my Uber app in Mexico?
Yes, you can. Different states in Mexico have different rules regarding Uber. In Quintana Roo, the state where Cancun is, Uber is legal.
Uber drivers cannot pick you up at the airport but can give you rides in town. There are not a lot of working Uber drivers, so it may take a long time to get an Uber driver to accept your ride.
How do I get from the Cancun airport to my hotel?
You have several options to get from the Cancun airport to your hotel, as mentioned above. You can book a private shuttle to take you from the airport to your hotel, or you can book a shared shuttle that will take you and others to your hotel.
I recommend booking either a private or shared shuttle. A shared shuttle will save you some money but will take a bit longer as you wait for other travelers to get on and off.
You can also take a taxi from the airport, but I do not recommend this. The taxi will try to overcharge you for the service.
Are taxis in Cancun expensive?
It depends on where you are going. Taxis’ rates are a set amount depending on the final destination, but also on when they pick you up. Within the downtown area, taxi prices are low.
Taxis in the hotel zone are more expensive.
The price is per trip, not per rider. Short distances can cost as little as 50 pesos, and the fare goes up the farther you travel. You can ask taxi drivers to see the rate chart.
If you can, pay taxi drivers in pesos. They will accept dollars, but not at a good exchange rate.

How much should a taxi cost from Cancun airport to the hotel zone?
As mentioned above, taxi drivers will try to overcharge you for a trip from the airport to the hotel zone. The rate should cost around $25, but they will try to charge you more.
Avoid having to fight over the price with a taxi driver and book a shuttle before you arrive in Cancun.
Can you take an Uber from Cancun Airport? Final Thoughts
No matter where your final destination in the Riviera Maya is, there are convenient ways to get there from the Cancun airport.
The Cancun airport is a busy place, with travelers coming and going constantly. Avoid the stress of the busy airport by having a travel plan in place before you arrive.
Whether you want the comfort and ease of a private shuttle or to save money and use public buses, making a travel plan will make your day stress-free.
